I'll admit it. I'm not a huge soccer fan. However, every four years when the World's largest sporting event is going on, it's hard not to watch with a particular level of excitement. Sure, at the root of it all, it's still soccer... which to me (yes, I'm biased) is filled with corruption, ridiculous flopping and over-acting, and is, of course, undeniably boring. But, as I test my sports fandom, I find myself enthralled by the action of the World Cup. If not for the obvious feel of pride and patriotism while watching your home country compete, one should at least marvel and appreciate the sheer magnitude of the event. The pageantry on display and the overwhelming elation of fans as their country scores a goal is simply hypnotic and certainly infectious. Yes, we're spoiled in the USA. Soccer is just above field hockey and trick-shot billards in the pecking order of sports (yes, that was an exaggeration). In other countries when you remember, they don't have the Texas Rangers or the New England Patriots or the New York Knicks to cheer for, they simply cheer for the only thing that can put their country on the map every four years. Then you realize that more people in the world can identify the shape of Texas or California before they would identify Ghana or Algeria, you find out how special this event must be for those smaller, lesser known countries. And that is one of the main reasons that I encourage everyone to give the World Cup a fair shot. You, like me, will be glad you did.

Ok, rant over, let's get to some trivia....

Game one of PubGuys trivia was a close one! Six teams finished within 4 points of the top spot. As the dust settled on Game one, Bowties Are Cool had just edged out DeadWrinkle. Piling up just behind them was Destin, FL, We're Here for the Beer Quiz in My Pants &  the Quizzly Bears.

In the Power Hour, the late-arriving ladies from We're Here for the Beer decided to put on a trivia clinic. Other teams put up a good fight, but these ladies were on a roll! They easily breezed through the round and to the top prize on the night. Claiming second place for the second straight game was DeadWrinkle. Study up, next week could be your time to shine!

Fun facts we learned during the night:

  • Archduke Franz Ferdinand's wife was name LaToya
  • The electrical term AC stands for "Already Clean"
  • Area 51 is in the great state of El Paso
  • The Stratocaster is manufactured by GE
  • The Shin Bone is better known as the Sternum

Have a great weekend and 1) don't forget to register your team on PubGuyTrivia.com, and 2) visit us next Wednesday for some more awesome PubGuys Trivia.
